For those who may not be as familiar with West Hollywood, it is one of the many cities located in California’s West Los Angeles County. It is also home to the renowned Sunset Strip and has a thriving nightlife that attracts both local and international tourists alike. Also worth noting, West Hollywood is a vibrant, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender)-friendly city that encourages freedom of expression and individuality. Although West Hollywood has several qualities that make it a compelling place to visit or even call home, the city also has a significant substance abuse problem.

According to a study published by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, West Hollywood ranks as 1 of the top 10 cities in Los Angeles County when it comes to alcohol use disorders. Of course, this says a lot when you take into consideration the fact that West Hollywood has fewer than 36,000 residents. Along with alcohol, the city also has a problem with the following substances:

  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Methamphetamines
  • Oxycontin
  • Morphine
  • Heroin

It should be noted that addiction is not only impacting the lives of many young adults but also seniors in West Hollywood, which lends credence to the fact that addiction can happen at any time in an individual’s life.

Before detailing some of the rehab facilities that individuals can turn to for help in overcoming their addiction to alcohol or drugs, let’s take a moment to explore the impact that substance abuse is having on the city of West Hollywood. According to the same study published by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, calculated at 159.9 per every 100,000 people, West Hollywood has more residents being hospitalized due to substance abuse than the state of California as a whole, which, as of the writing of this article, is currently 109.1 per every 100,000 residents. The study further revealed that 1,723 West Hollywood residents abuse marijuana, 754 abuse prescription-based drugs, 282 abuse cocaine, 128 abuse hallucinogens, and 16 abuse heroin. Substance abuse in West Hollywood has also led to an uptick in arrests, namely for the sale or possession of methamphetamines, heroin, and cocaine, according to the West Hollywood Station of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
