What is Equine & Animal Therapy?

Equine & Animal Therapy is a type of therapy where animals, specifically horses, are used to help treat trauma, PTSD, depression, and other disorders and help with building a foundation for your recovery. Relationships are developed with the animals that can help build perspective, self-efficacy, and relationship skills. Animal Therapy has been used throughout much of human history and has many practical benefits today.

How does Equine & Animal Therapy work?

A therapist works with an animal specialist and helps you care for and spend time with an animal, specifically horses, who are similar socially to humans. Caring for and spending time with the animal requires concentration, empathy, selflessness and teamwork. Building these skills and developing a relationship outside of yourself can help to build your confidence, and help with your behavioral and relationship problems. In addition, it has been shown to help with anxiety, grief, depression, and insomnia, among other ailments.

How will Equine & Animal Therapy help with my addiction?

The skills Equine & Animal Therapy helps build will aid in the treatment of your addiction. Working with animals requires you to be fully present and focus on the task at hand. It also requires you to gain the trust of the animal. Practicing all of these skills can help you regulate your emotions, instead of suppressing them or self-medicating.
